PROGRAMME OF THE TRAINING ACTIVITIES
Based on information provided by the participants prior to their arrival in Ireland, as identified in their needs analysis forms, daily course content may be negotiated between trainers and participants to a degree which ensures individual satisfaction.
Sunday: Arrival at Cork Airport and collection by host families or check in at apartments.
Monday – Friday: First lesson : 9 am to 11 am (Full 60 minutes)
Development of individual language proficiency with emphasis on the four skills. Presentation of materials which can be adapted for use in the classroom by the participants. A bibliography is provided.
Second lesson : 11.20 am to 1.20 pm Course content includes modules on teaching methodology and the exploitation of teaching materials with the particular needs of the respective target audience of the participants in mind. The main focus is on the practical application of the methodology introduced. Much attention is given to Task-Based Learning and the Communicative Approach in general.
Afternoon Sessions include five additional weekly hours of seminars on Irish culture (1.5 hours), practical workshops on the use of Drama & Games in the classroom (1.5 hours) and fluency development classes (2 hours). On the first Monday, a walking tour of Cork City is also arranged.
There is a day spent observing native English-speaking teachers in one of our junior summer centres with a feedback session.
A varied social and activity programme is offered so that the participants can sample Irish culture and have the opportunity to become familiar with life in Cork.
Preparation Applicants accepted onto the course are required to complete a needs analysis in addition to a language test. This information is then used to tailor the existing CEC course programme to the needs of the individual candidates if required.
Objectives The course is designed to give practising teachers the opportunity to explore new ideas and methodologies in teaching English while at the same time increasing their own proficiency in the language. It is the aim of Cork English College that those teachers who attend the course return to their schools with a range of practical ideas for the classroom and a renewed enthusiasm for their work. In addition, participation in this course will provide participants with the opportunity to network informally and formally with a view to creating valuable pan-European exchanges.
Methodology Daily modules on teaching methodology cover a wide spectrum beginning with the four main language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Other areas covered include grammar, vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, drama and role-play, folk tales and storytelling, debate and discussion and the use of multimedia songs, video and film. We use the communicative method in all our classes and this course is very much “hands on”.
Follow-up The dissemination and valorisation of what has been learned throughout the course is one of the most crucial objectives of the training, and so participants are advised to send us a report after three months on how they have used the skills and materials acquired from the course in their own classrooms. The idea is to keep the lines of communication open between participants and the school with a view to maintaining motivation. E-mail groups are also set up between the participants to develop and encourage continued pan-European exchanges. This is all in addition to guidance provided to participants on ways to complete the dissemination and valorisation tasks expected of them by their National Agencies on completion of the course.

The courses are recognised by INDIRE in Italy (and the 30 other countries participating in Comenius 2.2) but are not on the Grundtvig database. Funding will only be given if the Pilgrims course does not have an equivalent on the database, in other words if it other than a standard language and methodology course.
