Preparation
Participants are required to fill in a needs analysis prior to commencing the course. This enables the trainers to adapt the course to the needs and interests of a particular group. Participants should be teaching English as a subject or teaching their subject in English. Participants join a ‘virtual conversation’ on the Cork English College E-Learning platform, which asks them to reflect on their current teaching practice and enables them to get to know the trainers and fellow course participants prior to arriving in Cork. Throughout the course homework assignments are given in preparation for the following days’ modules and workshops.
Objectives
The course is designed to give practising teachers the opportunity to explore new ideas and methodologies in teaching English while at the same time improving and consolidating their own proficiency in the language. It is the aim of Cork English College that those teachers who attend the course return to their schools with a range of practical ideas for the classroom and a renewed enthusiasm for their work. In addition, participation in this course will provide participants with the opportunity to network informally and formally with a view to creating valuable pan-European exchanges.
Methodology
Daily modules on teaching methodology cover a wide spectrum of areas beginning with the four main language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Other areas covered include grammar, vocabulary acquisition and revision, pronunciation, use of technology in the classroom, learner background and teacher roles.
Consideration is also given to exploitation of teaching materials and the adaptation of materials for different ages and ability levels.
In addition, a teaching observation session in a summer school provides an opportunity for the teachers to see fellow professionals at work in the classroom and share their observations in the feedback sessions which follow. These observations take place in our junior summer camp, allowing teachers to observe EFL (English as a Foreign Language) techniques and procedures in action.
Following the feedback sessions, workshops are facilitated by CEC teacher trainers in which common knowledge and experience is shared and the ideas from various European countries are compared and contrasted This provides a forum for the participants of the respective European countries to share their ideas and experiences and above all to learn from each other as teaching professionals. This will, in turn, serve to inform their classroom practices on return home.
Throughout the course Cork English College equally provides teachers with extensive training with a view to improving their own language skills and proficiency. Discussions, debates and other communicative activities are widely used to develop oral fluency and opportunities for practical use of the language are maximised.
Seminars are held twice weekly on the subject of Irish culture plus drama/games for the classroom for both secondary and primary school teachers. These can be tailored to suit the needs of the group.
Follow-up
On completion of the course all trainees are invited to fill in an end of course evaluation form. They are then encouraged to keep in contact on a regular basis both with the College and with each other. The ‘virtual conversation’ is maintained on the E-Learning platform to promote continued reflection on teaching practice and to enable the course participants to share their experiences following the course. The idea is to keep the lines of communication open between participants and the school with a view to maintaining motivation.
